WooCommerce Product Bundles: Multi-Currency Bundle Pricing

Quick verdict

Product Bundles has no multi-currency capability of its own. Bundle prices are held in your base currency and are not passed to a currency switcher for conversion, so on a multi-currency store a bundle will display the base-currency figure while the rest of the catalogue converts correctly. Aelia publishes a free integration addon that resolves this, and it requires no configuration. Both simple bundle pricing and per-item pricing are handled. The addon is a stopgap by design: it exists because Bundles is not natively multi-currency aware, and Aelia says so on the product page.

Bundles are one of the more reliable ways to lift average order value, which is why a store that has settled its catalogue often reaches for them next. The problem arrives later, and only for merchants selling across borders: everything on the site converts into the customer’s currency except the bundles.

This review covers what Product Bundles does, where it stops on an international store, and how the Aelia stack closes that gap.

What Product Bundles Does

Product Bundles lets you sell several products together as a single purchasable item. It is published by Woo directly, currently at version 8.5.10, priced at £60 per year on the one-year plan.

The mechanism is that a bundle is its own product type. It references existing catalogue items rather than duplicating them, so stock, variations and fulfilment continue to work against the underlying products. That is the reason it scales better than building a static “kit” product by hand.

It suits a merchant who already has a working catalogue and wants to raise order value without adding SKUs: a starter set, a refill pack, a hardware and accessory pairing, a course plus workbook. Because it groups existing products, it also handles physical, virtual and downloadable items, and integrates with Subscriptions, Memberships and Product Add-ons.

Key Features

  • Grouped product types, bundling simple, variable and subscription products into one purchasable item that still draws on the underlying stock records.
  • Two pricing models, either a single price for the whole bundle or per-item pricing that sums the components.
  • Optional items with customer-selected quantities, so a bundle can be partly configurable rather than fixed.
  • Bulk quantity discounts via its own dynamic pricing rules, applied at the bundle level.
  • Revenue analytics for bundles, reporting on bundle purchases separately from individual product sales.
  • Insufficient-stock detection, flagging bundles that cannot be fulfilled because a component has run out.
  • Template and REST API support, for customising how bundles render and for programmatic access.

Where Product Bundles Falls Short on International Stores

The gap is multi-currency, and it is narrow but consequential. Product Bundles holds its prices in the store’s base currency and does not pass the bundle’s product type to a currency switcher for conversion. The result on a multi-currency store is inconsistent rather than broken: individual products convert, bundles do not.

That inconsistency is worse than a uniform failure, because it is easy to miss during testing and obvious to a customer. A shopper browsing in euros sees euro prices throughout the catalogue and then a dollar figure on the bundle, which reads as an error on your part rather than a currency they were not expecting.

This is not a criticism of the plugin so much as a boundary. Making a product multi-currency aware has to be done by whoever controls its pricing logic, and an external plugin cannot reach inside another plugin’s price calculation without co-operation. That is the seam the Aelia addon sits in.

With the integration addon active, the bundle price is passed through the Currency Switcher’s conversion, whether the bundle uses a single price or per-item pricing.

Aelia Currency Switcher

Status: fully tested with Product Bundles.

The Currency Switcher handles pricing and payment in multiple currencies, refreshing exchange rates automatically from providers including Open Exchange Rates and OFX, and storing the applied rate against each order. With the free integration addon active, bundle prices configured through Product Bundles are converted into the active currency along with everything else, which removes the inconsistency described above. Read more on the Currency Switcher product page, £89.00 ex. VAT.

Aelia Prices by Country

Status: not separately tested. Prices by Country also adjusts product prices, so on a store where Product Bundles controls bundle pricing the two can overlap. Verify the interaction on staging before going live.

As a capability, Prices by Country reads the visitor’s country by geolocation and substitutes a deliberately set regional price instead of an exchange-rate conversion. On a bundle-heavy catalogue that is attractive, because a bundle is a pricing decision rather than a component sum, and rate-derived bundle prices drift. Because both plugins write to the product price, treat this as a combination to test rather than a documented integration. Read more on the Prices by Country product page, £69.00 ex. VAT.

Aelia Tax Display by Country

Status: no known issues. Operates on tax display, a separate layer from Product Bundles.

Tax Display by Country shows prices with or without tax depending on the visitor’s country, detected automatically by IP geolocation. Bundles raise the stakes on this because the absolute amount is larger, so an ex-VAT bundle price shown to an EU consumer grows by a more noticeable figure at checkout. It should run alongside Product Bundles without conflict, since it changes presentation rather than price. Read more on the Tax Display by Country product page, £69.00 ex. VAT.

Prices by Country sets a deliberate price per market instead of an exchange-rate figure, which suits bundles because a bundle price is a commercial decision rather than a component sum. Verify the combination on staging first.

Stack Recommendation

For a store selling bundles across the EU and the US, run Product Bundles plus the Currency Switcher plus the free Bundles integration addon, and add Tax Display by Country if you sell to both consumers and VAT-registered businesses.

Setup Notes

Install order matters, because the integration addon looks for both plugins at activation.

  1. Install the free Aelia Foundation Classes (AFC). It is installed automatically beneath Aelia premium plugins, but confirm it is active.
  2. Install and activate the Aelia Currency Switcher, and set your base currency before adding bundle prices.
  3. Install and activate Product Bundles.
  4. Install and activate the free Bundles Integration for Currency Switcher addon, last of the four. It requires no configuration and begins working on activation.

Two settings to check afterwards. First, confirm your base currency is correct before entering bundle prices, because changing it later means re-checking every bundle rather than every product. Second, if you use Product Bundles’ own bulk quantity discount rules, test them in a non-base currency specifically: discount rules are applied to the converted figure, and a percentage behaves predictably while a fixed amount does not.

Then test a bundle in at least two currencies before going live, checking both the catalogue price and the basket total. The catalogue can be correct while the basket is not, and the basket is where it costs you.

Before you go live

  • Bundle price converts in the catalogue for a non-base currency
  • Bundle price still converts correctly in the basket and at checkout
  • Per-item pricing bundles sum correctly after conversion, not before
  • Any bundle-level quantity discount still applies in the converted currency
  • The exchange rate is recorded against a test order for later refunds

What Aelia Customers Say

“Great plugin, which works exactly as hoped, and great support service. I found a minor issue relating to the integration of Prices by Country with the WooCommerce Subscriptions plugin. Diego sorted out the fix and sent a development version within the day, in advance of the plugin update being released.”

Gavin, Prices by Country, 5 stars

FAQ

Does Product Bundles Work With Multi-Currency Out of the Box?

No. Bundle prices are held in the store’s base currency and are not passed to a currency switcher for conversion, so bundles display the base-currency figure while the rest of the catalogue converts. The free Aelia integration addon resolves this.

Do I Need the Free Integration Addon?

Yes, if you run Product Bundles on a multi-currency store. It is free, requires no configuration, and works as soon as it is activated. Install it after both the Currency Switcher and Product Bundles are active. Note that being free, it does not include support; paid consultations are available separately.

Does It Support Per-Item Bundle Pricing?

Yes. The addon handles both a single price for the whole bundle and per-item pricing where the components are summed. Test the per-item case specifically, because the sum should happen after conversion rather than before.

Can I Set Different Bundle Prices per Country, Not Just Converted Prices?

That is what Prices by Country does as a capability, and it is often more appropriate for bundles than conversion, because a bundle price is a deliberate commercial decision. It has not been separately tested against Product Bundles and both write to the product price, so verify the combination on staging first. Our comparison of regional pricing versus multi-currency sets out which of the two you actually need.

What Happens to Tax When the Currency Changes?

Tax is calculated on the converted price, so the rate applies as normal. What does not change automatically is whether the price is displayed inclusive or exclusive of tax by country, which is a presentation decision. Tax Display by Country handles that, and our guide to WooCommerce EU VAT compliance covers the rules behind it.
